Artificial Intelligence and creativity are no longer separate disciplines: they are converging into a new way of thinking, designing, and innovating.
In a world where generative AI tools are reshaping how ideas are explored and executed, the real challenge is not learning how to use technology, but learning how to collaborate with it creatively and consciously.

As a lecturer in Artificial Intelligence and Creativity @Scuola Politecnica del Design, I work with designers, professionals and creative thinkers to explore how AI can amplify human imagination rather than replace it. The focus is not on automation for its own sake, but on developing critical thinking, creative direction, and ethical awareness in the use of AI-powered tools.

This course is designed to help creatives understand where human intuition, experience and emotional intelligence remain irreplaceable, and how artificial intelligence can become a strategic partner in ideation, problem-solving, and innovation. Because the future of creativity doesn’t belong to machines alone, it belongs to humans who know how to use them with purpose.

How AI boosts creativity
  • Idea Generation:
AI helps brainstorm, explore diverse angles, and overcome creative blocks by rapidly generating varied concepts, as seen in teams producing more original ideas with AI assistance.
  • Efficiency:
It handles mundane tasks, freeing up cognitive resources for higher-level creative thinking, making creators faster and more productive.
  • New Possibilities:
AI enables novel forms of art and storytelling, expanding what's imaginable in fields like music, writing, and visual arts.
Limitations of AI in creativity
  • Lack of Intuition:
AI relies on data patterns, missing the spontaneous "happy accidents," emotional motivations, and subjective experiences that drive unique human insights.
  • Originality vs. Familiarity:
AI-generated content can sometimes feel generic or average, leading to cultural stagnation if overused, despite its initial novelty.
The human role in AI-driven creativity
  • Collaboration, Not Replacement:
The most successful approach treats AI as a teammate or assistant to augment human ingenuity, not automate it away.
  • Mindset Matters:
Using AI for knowledge gathering or refining drafts supports creativity, while letting it substitute core tasks can hinder personal growth
  • Critical Thinking:
Users must maintain critical evaluation, questioning AI outputs and using them as prompts for deeper exploration rather than final answers, according to
