Coloured Maze

2011

Aether & Hemera was appointed by Newcastle City Council to create two artistic features for the entrances of Harbottle Park, a recreation space that is undergoing renewal and improvement that will make it a destination facility for local community. Both the designed artworks gave stature to the site, marking it out as a major recreation area for the community, invoking local historical context and providing a statement of optimism about the future that encourages its use.

Coloured Maze, done in collaboration with Alan Vaughan is a Cor-ten artwork for the South East entrance which users can interact with and choose its colour through their mobile phones. The artworks also integrate stainless steel sand blasted details with map elements of the local area, as direct result of community workshops as well as patterns inspired by the former Sun Ray Clinic in Brinkburn Street, Byker. Dimensions: 4m x 6m; materials: LED lights, electronics, bespoken software and Cor-ten steel.

Commissioned by Newcastle City Council.
